EMERGENCY is an independent and neutral international organisation founded in 1994 to provide free, high-quality medical and surgical care to victims of war, landmines and poverty.
We believe that the right to care is a fundamental human right, so our approach to healthcare is based on: equality, quality and social responsibility
Company History
EMERGENCY provides free, high-quality care to victims of conflict and poverty, alongside building hospitals and training local staff. We pursue a human rights-based medicine.
EMERGENCY has projects in Afghanistan, Iraq, Italy, Palestine, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Uganda, and Ukraine, where we offer free and quality care in our medical facilities, including: hospitals, first aid posts, health centres, paediatric centres, rehabilitation centres, maternity centres, centres of excellence, outpatient clinics and mobile clinics. In Eritrea, we support the activities of the cardiology outpatient clinic of the Orotta Medical Surgical National Referral Hospital in Asmara. We are also in the Central Mediterranean with our ship, Life Support, for search and rescue (SAR) activities.

Gino Strada was the founder, surgeon, Executive Director, the soul of EMERGENCY.
Gino Strada’s lifelong dedication to helping vulnerable people and promoting healthcare as a human right has been recognised on several occasions.
2017 – Gino received the Sunhak Peace Prize, awarded to those pursuing peace for future generations, for his efforts to provide free, high-quality medical care to refugees and war victims.
2015 – Gino received the Right Livelihood Award, given to change-makers striving for a more just, peaceful and sustainable world, “for his great humanity and skill in providing outstanding medical and surgical services to the victims of conflict and injustice, while fearlessly addressing the causes of war.”
2006 – Gino received an honorary degree of Doctor in Humane Letters from Colorado College in the United States.
